Islamic Phrases

Alhamdulillah Ala Kulli Hal in Arabic

Alhamdulillahi 'ala Kulli Hal

All praise is for Allah in every situation.

Meaning

Alhamdulillah means "all praise is for Allah", 'ala means "upon" or "in", and kulli hal means "every state". Aisha reported that when the Prophet saw something he disliked he said these words, and when he saw something that pleased him he said "Alhamdulillahil-ladhi bi ni'matihi tatimmus-salihat". It praises Allah in hardship as well as in ease.

When to say it: Said when something unwelcome happens, or when someone asks how you are and life is hard, to show contentment with what Allah has decreed.

Also spelled Alhamdulillah ala kulli haal, Alhamdulillah 'ala kulli hal, Alhamdulillah alakulli hal, Alhamdulillah in every situation.

Common questions

When do you say Alhamdulillah ala kulli hal?

When something difficult or unwelcome happens. For good news the Prophet said "Alhamdulillahil-ladhi bi ni'matihi tatimmus-salihat": praise be to Allah, by whose favour good things are completed.

How is it different from Alhamdulillah?

Alhamdulillah on its own can be said at any time. Adding 'ala kulli hal (in every situation) makes clear that you praise Allah even when things are hard.
