Meaning
Allahumma ahlilhu 'alayna means "O Allah, bring it over us", bil-yumni wal-iman means "with blessing and faith", was-salamati wal-islam means "with safety and Islam", and rabbi wa rabbukallah means "my Lord and your Lord is Allah", spoken to the moon. Talhah ibn Ubaydullah reported that the Prophet said this when he saw the new moon. Islamic months begin with this sighting, so Muslims say it at the start of Ramadan, before Eid and in every other month.
When to say it: Said on seeing the new crescent moon at the start of each Islamic month, including Ramadan and Shawwal.
Also spelled Allahumma ahillahu alaina bil yumni wal iman, Allahumma ahlilhu alayna, Dua for new moon, Dua on seeing the crescent, Hilal dua.
Said on Ramadan, Islamic New Year.
