1 Ramadan 1448 AH

The month of fasting, from dawn to sunset, in which the Quran was revealed.

What it is

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Fasting it from dawn to sunset is one of the five pillars of Islam. The Quran says it is the month in which the Quran was revealed (2:185). It lasts 29 or 30 days, depending on the moon, and ends with Eid al-Fitr. It appears in the Quran at 2:185.

Also spelled Ramadhan, Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadan start.

What Muslims do

Muslims eat suhoor before dawn and break the fast at sunset with iftar, often with dates and water. Nights are spent in tarawih prayer and reading the Quran, and many give more charity. The last ten nights are the most important, because Laylatul Qadr falls in them.

Ramadan begins when the new moon is sighted. The first fast is usually on the date shown; the first night of tarawih prayer is the evening before.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Many countries set their own dates by local moon sighting or a national authority, as in Pakistan, India, Indonesia and Malaysia, so the date where you live can be a day later.
