Islamic New Year 2027

Expected date

Sunday, 6 June 2027

1 Muharram 1449 AH

The 1st of Muharram, the start of the Hijri year.

What it is

The Islamic calendar counts years from the Hijrah, the Prophet's migration from Makkah to Madinah. The caliph Umar set this as the start of the calendar. Muharram is the first month and one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran (9:36). The Islamic year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so the date moves earlier each year. It appears in the Quran at 9:36.

Also spelled Hijri New Year, 1st Muharram, Awal Muharram, Maal Hijrah, Hicri Yılbaşı.

What Muslims do

There is no special prayer or ritual fixed for the new year. Many Muslims use it to reflect on the past year and make dua for the one ahead, and some say the dua for seeing the new moon. Some countries hold a public holiday.

Phrases and duas for Islamic New Year

Common questions

Is there a dua for the Islamic New Year?

No dua is reported specifically for the new year. Many Muslims say the dua for seeing the new moon, which the Prophet said at the start of every month.

Can you say Happy Islamic New Year?

Many Muslims exchange new-year greetings as a kind wish for the year ahead. Scholars differ on whether this is encouraged, since it is not reported from the early Muslims, but most treat it as an ordinary custom.
