Islamic Phrases

Yarhamukallah in Arabic

Yarhamukallah

May Allah have mercy on you.

Meaning

Yarhamu means "has mercy", ka means "you", and Allah is the one who gives mercy. A well-known hadith sets out the etiquette for sneezing. The person who sneezes says "Alhamdulillah", the listener replies "Yarhamukallah", and the sneezer answers "Yahdikumullah wa yuslih balakum" (may Allah guide you and set your affairs right).

When to say it: Said to someone who sneezes and says Alhamdulillah.

Also spelled Yarhamuk Allah, Yarhamukumullah, Yarhamukallahu, Yerhamukallah.
