Islamic Phrases

Allah Hafiz in Arabic

Allah Hafiz

May Allah be your protector.

Meaning

Allah is God and hafiz means "protector" or "guardian", so the phrase wishes that Allah protects the person you are leaving. It comes from Urdu and Persian rather than Arabic. The older form is Khuda Hafiz, using the Persian word for God; Allah Hafiz has become more common in Pakistan in recent decades. Arabic speakers more often say Fi amanillah or Ma'a salama.

When to say it: Said when saying goodbye, mostly in Pakistan, India and among Urdu speakers.

Also spelled Allah Hafeez, Allah Haafiz, Khuda Hafiz, Khudahafiz, Khuda Hafeez.
