O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I hold to Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me and I acknowledge my sins, so forgive me, for no one forgives sins except You.

Meaning

Sayyidul istighfar means "the master of seeking forgiveness". It praises Allah as Lord and Creator, renews the promise to serve Him, admits both His blessings and one's own sins, and then asks for forgiveness. Shaddad ibn Aws reported that the Prophet called it the best way of seeking forgiveness, and said that whoever says it during the day with firm belief and dies before evening will be among the people of Paradise, and the same for whoever says it at night and dies before morning. Al-Bukhari recorded it.

When to say it: Said in the morning and in the evening, and at any time you want to ask Allah for forgiveness.

Also spelled Sayyid al-Istighfar, Sayyidul istighfar dua, Allahumma anta rabbi la ilaha illa anta khalaqtani, Dua for forgiveness, Master of seeking forgiveness.

Common questions

When should Sayyidul Istighfar be said?

In the morning and the evening: the hadith promises its reward to whoever says it during the day or during the night. It can also be said at any other time, such as after a sin or in the last part of the night.

Why is it called the master of istighfar?

Because it gathers everything that makes repentance complete: affirming Allah's oneness, thanking Him for His blessings, admitting one's sins and asking Him alone for forgiveness.
