The festival that ends Ramadan, on the first day of Shawwal.

What it is

Eid al-Fitr means "the festival of breaking the fast". It marks the end of Ramadan and falls on the first day of Shawwal. Fasting on the day of Eid is not allowed. Before the Eid prayer, every Muslim who can afford it gives zakat al-fitr, a set amount of food or its value, to people in need.

Also spelled Eid ul Fitr, Idul Fitri, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Ramazan Bayramı, Choti Eid.

What Muslims do

Muslims pay zakat al-fitr, wear their best clothes, eat something sweet such as dates before leaving home, and go to the Eid prayer in the morning. On the way they repeat the Eid takbir. The day is spent with family, visiting relatives and giving gifts to children.

Eid al-Fitr is on the first day of Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends, once the new moon is sighted.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Many countries set their own dates by local moon sighting or a national authority, as in Pakistan, India, Indonesia and Malaysia, so the date where you live can be a day later.
