27 Ramadan 1448 AH

The Night of Power, better than a thousand months, in the last ten nights of Ramadan.

What it is

Laylatul Qadr means "the Night of Power" or "the Night of Decree". It is the night the Quran was first revealed, and Surah Al-Qadr says it is better than a thousand months, that the angels descend in it, and that it is peace until dawn. A well-known hadith says that whoever stands in prayer on this night with faith and hoping for reward has his past sins forgiven. It appears in the Quran at 97:1.

Also spelled Laylat al-Qadr, Lailatul Qadr, Shab-e-Qadr, Night of Power, Night of Decree.

What Muslims do

Muslims spend the last ten nights of Ramadan in extra prayer, Quran recitation, dhikr and dua, hoping to catch the night. Many go into i'tikaf, staying in the mosque for worship. The dua the Prophet taught Aisha for this night is "Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni".

Laylatul Qadr is one of the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan, and its exact date is not known. The date shown is the 27th night, which many Muslims single out, but the night is sought on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Many countries set their own dates by local moon sighting or a national authority, as in Pakistan, India, Indonesia and Malaysia, so the date where you live can be a day later.

Common questions

Which night is Laylatul Qadr?

It is one of the odd nights in the last ten nights of Ramadan: the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th. Its exact date was not revealed, so Muslims seek it on all of them. Many give special attention to the 27th.

What is the best dua for Laylatul Qadr?

Aisha asked the Prophet what to say if she knew which night it was, and he taught her: "Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni", O Allah, You are the One who pardons and You love to pardon, so pardon me.

Why does the date differ between countries?

Islamic months start with the new moon, and countries that sight the moon locally can start Ramadan a day later than Saudi Arabia. Check the start of Ramadan where you live and count the odd nights from there.
