What it is
The Isra is the Prophet's night journey from Makkah to Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, mentioned in Surah Al-Isra (17:1). The Mi'raj is his ascension from there through the heavens, where the five daily prayers were made obligatory. Many Muslims mark it on the 27th of Rajab, though the exact date is not known and scholars differ on marking it with special worship. It appears in the Quran at 17:1.

What Muslims do
Where it is marked, Muslims gather to hear the story of the journey, pray voluntary prayers and send salawat on the Prophet. Others mark nothing on the night itself, as no specific worship is reported for it.

Many Muslims mark the Isra and Mi'raj on the night of the 27th of Rajab. Historians and scholars give other dates too, and the exact date is not established.
Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Many countries set their own dates by local moon sighting or a national authority, as in Pakistan, India, Indonesia and Malaysia, so the date where you live can be a day later.

Is the 27th of Rajab the confirmed date?
No. It is the most widely marked date, but early scholars gave several dates and none is confirmed.
Are there special prayers for Shab-e-Miraj?
No specific prayer or fast for this night is reported from the Prophet. Some Muslims pray voluntary prayers on it, and many scholars advise not to treat any particular form of worship as required.
